I am actually really excited about Tauriel in The Hobbit. She sounds like she’ll be a really cool addition to the story. Plus besides the first time we see Arwen, there isn’t really a kickass elf woman. I trust Peter and Fran and them, I’m not worried in the slightest.

I disagree with the statement that besides Arwen there wasn’t a kickass elf woman. Why does everyone overlook Galadriel? She’s freaking awesome!

I agree with annexlearnedhazard. A woman does not need to wield a sword for her to be a strong character. And a sword does not make a female character “good.”

Being a “badass” doesn’t mean that the character will be dimensional or interesting; in fact, if a character’s main points are that the character is a badass and that the character has a romantic arc, then it seems like the character has a high probability of being flat. I got in an argument once with someone over Tauriel, and she seemed convinced that a warrior-woman character automatically meant that the character wouldn’t be flat — despite the fact that all we know about her is a series of one cliche after the other. (Warrior woman, forbidden/unrequited love, etc.)

While no one can pass judgement just yet, the general logic of that is completely untrue. It doesn’t matter the gender; a one-dimensional character will always be one-dimensional, and no amount of fighting skills can fix that.

Legolas is a Silvan dialect form of the Sindarin Laegolas. Which means ‘Greenleaf’.

It’s just his name translated.

Laeg = green - it’s a rare spelling, and the word is normally replaced by calen.

Golas = a collection of leaves or foliage.

So technically he’s called Calengolas. Or something like that.

I really hope that Yahoo doesn’t try doing something retarded with Tumblr and leave it as it is. The most concerning thing for me is the fact that Yahoo doesn’t have a good track record with the things it buys, like Geocities and Flickr.

There are pros and cons, and the cons scare me quite a bit. I don’t like the idea of ads being introduced to Tumblr in the first place, but I have AdBlock on my computer, so it doesn’t really matter to me. I’m also worried that Yahoo will try to mess with the basic layout and functions of Tumblr, trying to “make it better” and failing spectacularly. This is really why I’m mostly against Yahoo buying Tumblr; I’m not keen on them having the power to fix what isn’t broken. ~~They can fuck with the video player as much as they want.~~ There is also the fear of Tumblr becoming “the new Facebook” or “the new Twitter.” You can say that’s a hipster mentality, but Facebook and Twitter have been pretty much run into the ground. Facebook is, from what I see, not far from becoming “the new Myspace.” In a culture of disposal, trends come and go within a few years; the longer a website is out of the general cultural awareness, the longer it will last because it isn’t popular enough for people to catch on, chase the older members away, and then leave the website for dead when the new thing comes out.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with Yahoo’s messenger/e-mail system; it’s pretty basic. Maybe we’ll get a more reliable live chat, as opposed to Babblr. We have XIM 7, but not many people use that, so it may as well not even exist.

If this happens, it happens. We really can’t do anything and, if Karp hasn’t done anything on behalf of Tumblr’s (very vocal) users until now, there’s probably nothing he will ever do. We can only sit back and watch.
